Sheila McKechnie was one of the most significant and influential UK figures of the 1980s and 1990s. She was an ardent campaigner who made a positive – and on-going – difference to the lives of millions of people, most of whom do not even know it. People she worked with at the Foyer Federation, Shelter, Which? (the Consumers’ Association) and the Architecture Foundation set up the Foundation in her name in 2005 to celebrate and support a new generation of campaigners tackling the root causes of injustice. Set up in memory of Dame Sheila McKechnie, SMK is entirely dedicated to helping campaigners create positive and lasting social change.
The Awards open for nominations in the summer, and past Award winners are an inspiration for campaigners.
